Satchmo in Szolnok?

When I researched The Angel Makers, I took deep dives into nearly every aspect of 1920s-30s Hungarian life.

My assistant, Attila, was wonderful about digging up details, including the rumor that Louis Armstrong performed at the Hotel Tisza in Szolnok in 1933.

Prosecutor Kronberg was a fan of jazz and used to attend jazz nights at the Hotel Tisza. Did he and Irene see Satchmo live?

They certainly may have. In ’32, Louis Armstrong was left stranded in Europe when his gangster manager fled back to the USA after Satchmo punched him for calling him the “n” word.

He took Satchmo’s passport with him. Armstrong and his girlfriend, stuck in Europe, continued touring the continent and would stay on for two years.
